I have a few bones to pick with this next story, though many of you, I'm sure, will find it quite humerus.
Yes, this Florida woman, 52-year-old Kymberlee Schopper of Deltona, seems to honestly have had no idea it was illegal to sell human bones in Florida. She had been selling them at her store, Wicked Wonderland, for quite some time before police caught on.
Here's what kind of products the store was advertising on Facebook before police arrived to confirm.
Investigators said they found the following human remains for sale on the store's website:
Two human skull fragments — $90
A human clavicle and scapula — $90
A human rib — $35
A human vertebrae — $35
A partial human skull — $600
As you and I both now know, it is illegal to sell human remains in Florida. But police had to confirm that these were actual human remains, and not just fakes. So they did some research.
In the year to follow, several of the bones were examined by experts, who found the following:
The confiscated cranium belonged to an adult man and was likely an archaeological find.
One skull fragment came from the right parietal bone and was likely an archaeological find.
The cervical vertebra may have been part of an anatomical model due to its condition and "uniform brown coloration."
A sample taken from one of the bones revealed it could be over 100 years old.
Another bone sample suggested an age of over 500 years.
Promptly, Kymberlee Schopper was arrested for breaking the human remains law. Her plan, it seems, is to cling to the idea that these were "educational models," which may somehow get her and her store out of trouble here, though I don't quite see how.
Schopper was released from jail on $7,500 bond.
For the record, Kymberlee Schopper seems to have been a great sport through all of this, simply not understanding what was going on at first. I mean, as a free-market guy, I don't really get it either (though I do understand the law when it comes to abortion), but you gotta give Kymberlee credit for keeping her cool here.
