On Thursday night, a B-1 Lancer Bomber on a flight near a South Dakota Air Force base had to be abandoned by the crew before a crash landing.
The B-1 crashed "at approximately 5:50 p.m. today while attempting to land on the installation. At the time of the accident, it was on a training mission. There were four aircrew on board. All four ejected safely," the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth (Air Force base) said in a statement.
Yesterday, at the time of the crash, temperatures were freezing and visibility was low.
The aircraft were used extensively in Iraq and Afghanistan in the 2000s but are not in use much anymore. There are about 60 left in use by the US Air Force now.
Well, I guess maybe 59 now ...
That's millions of dollars in damage right there.
This is all the information we have so far on the crash. It may have just been a failed landing attempt as it appears.
An investigation is being carried out by an Air Force board.
