In addition to making people go crazy, it sounds like using marijuana, even occasionally, is linked to type 2 diabetes as well.

In a recently released study from the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, Dr Ibrahim Kamel from the Boston Medical Center in Massachusetts studied 96,795 cannabis users between the ages of 18-50 between 2010 and 2018.

He found that the group was roughly four times more likely to get Type 2 diabetes than a control group that didn't use marijuana.

After controlling HDL and LDL cholesterol, uncontrolled high blood pressure, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, cocaine use, alcohol use and several other lifestyle risk factors, the researchers found that new cases of diabetes were significantly higher in the cannabis group (1,937; 2.2%) compared to the healthy group (518; 0.6%).

Without further research, Kamel cannot say why the cannabis users had a higher likelihood of getting diabetes, but there certainly seems to be a correlation.

‘As cannabis becomes more widely available and socially accepted, and legalized in various jurisdictions, it is essential to understand its potential health risks,' said lead author Dr Kamel. ‘These new sights from reliable real-world evidence highlight the importance of integrating diabetes risk awareness into substance use disorder treatment and counseling, as well as the need for healthcare professional to routinely talk to patients about cannabis use so that they can understand their overall diabetes risk and potential need for metabolic monitoring.'

I'm no doctor or scientist mind you, but there is one well-known side effect of marijuana that might help explain the diabetes correlation.

I'm just sayin'!
