A couple of weeks ago, Houston man Jaythan Gilder walked into the Orlando, Florida, Tiffany & Co to peruse the veritable buffet of expensive jewelry. He had called himself "Shawn," and claimed he was negotiating a sale for a player from the NBA's Orlando Magic.

This was a complete lie, and kind of a good one, because after he scoped out a few diamond earrings and a ring, it was time to get "Shawn" into the VIP room where these large transactions take place.
Gilder obviously wasn't there to negotiate prices; he was there to snag the jewelry, which he quickly got to work on. He grabbed the jewels and made for the door to the VIP room, which was secured.
Still, he managed to fend off the employee and rip the locked door open, fighting off a few other employees who tried to stop him once he was back in the store.
But security cameras picked him up on the way to his car, and officers pulled him over not long after that.
Then Gilder did what any rational jewel thief would do: He swallowed the goods.

As he was being taken into custody, Gilder allegedly swallowed several items. The highway patrol officers transporting him to jail heard him allegedly say, ‘I should have thrown them out the window.'
And he was right about that.
Gilder spent the next two weeks in the hospital with eager detectives collecting every stool sample he produced, looking for the $769,000 in earrings he swallowed.

When the earrings were finally recovered, they were sent to Tiffany's to be "cleaned."
And now we'll assume they're at the discount Tiffany's down the street.

It turns out this guy has a near-identical robbery on his record at a Tiffany's in Houston, Texas.
And you have to wonder, how "near" is near?
Has he dined and dashed before?

Gilder is charged with grand theft in the first degree.
