Postal worker Rungphet Bodnar of Michigan was recently named a Letter Carrier Hero of the Year by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) for her bravery in fighting off a Pitbull after she witnessed the dog dragging a young child while on her mail route last April.
The National Association of Letter Carriers reported that,
Rungphet Bodnar was driving on her route when she noticed children at a bus stop running and screaming. Then she noticed a dog dragging a little girl across a lawn by her leg.
A woman was trying to grab the child, but the dog kept ripping the girl from the woman's grip. Bodnar stopped her postal vehicle and sprang into action. She used her dog spray, applying it several times. After a few minutes, the two women were able to pry the dog off and free the girl.
That's what I call going above and beyond the call of duty.
After successfully fighting off the dog, the animal retreated into a backyard, and Bodnar used her mail truck to block off the yard until animal control arrived. The dog was later euthanized.
The child was taken to the hospital, and underwent multiple surgeries before she was able to return to school about a month after the mauling.
Now a year after the attack, whenever the letter carrier is delivering mail in that neighborhood, the little girl whose life she helped save is overjoyed to see her hero. Bodnar says,
She comes up to me and gives me hugs. Every time she sees the mail truck, she comes running. That's the best.
