But I keep seeing stuff like this:
In 2023, 8% of the students at the University of Michigan were Chinese. Jian is a post-doctoral research fellow there. Her boyfriend, Zunyong Liu, attends university in China and works on the same pathogen.
The FBI's Detroit office says the pair lied about smuggling the fungus into the Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Liu's backpack in July 2024. Liu was detained at the airport and asked about the material before being sent back to China (he apparently played dumb).
The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan announced Tuesday that it has charged them with conspiracy, smuggling, visa fraud, and giving false statements.

This case is a sobering reminder that the CCP is working around the clock to deploy operatives and researchers to infiltrate American institutions and target our food supply, which would have grave consequences... putting American lives and our economy at serious risk.
Maybe this pair really was just trying to advance science by ... smuggling a deadly fungus over international lines. Maybe they really weren't thinking about terrorism or the desire of the Chinese government to undermine America.
This tidbit from the Associated Press might shine a light on that:
The FBI said authorities found a scientific article on Liu's phone that was titled, 'Plant-Pathogen Warfare under Changing Climate Conditions.'
A week before arriving in the U.S., according to investigators, Liu exchanged messages with Jian, who said, 'It's a pity that I still have to work for you.'
The FBI said Liu replied: 'Once this is done, everything else will be easy.'

Anyway, the Left says we need to let hundreds of thousands of Chinese students study in America.
It's essential to them, really.
