On Sunday, 41-year-old Louis Geri was arrested with Molotov cocktails and other potential explosive devices outside St. Matthew's Cathedral in Washington, which was set to hold its annual prayer service for the nation's judges.
U.S. Supreme Court justices were expected to be in attendance ahead of their new term.
Louis Geri, 41, of Vineland, New Jersey, is facing preliminary charges of unlawful entry, threats to kidnap or injure a person, and possession of a Molotov cocktail.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, officers assigned to security for the Red Mass at the cathedral confronted Geri around 6 a.m.
Police said Geri had previously been barred from the property, and when he refused to leave, officers took him into custody without incident.
During the arrest, officers said they found several suspicious items inside Geri's tent, including vials of liquid and what appeared to be fireworks. MPD's Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team and the Arson Task Force responded to inspect and remove the materials.
A Red Mass is a Catholic gathering that marks the beginning of a judicial year with prayer for lawyers, judges, and other magistrates, asking the Holy Spirit to give them wisdom so that justice may be effectively and righteously administered. The tradition dates back to at least 1245.
The Archdiocese of Washington and the John Carroll Society have held a Red Mass at St. Matthew's Cathedral annually since 1953.
The Supreme Court is set to hear major cases this term, including tariffs, bans on men in women's sports, and birthright citizenship.
No motive has been given for Geri's actions (because of course).
