Californian couple David Weisberg and his girlfriend, Nancy Nicoloro, were on a cleanup project with Volunteers Cleaning Communities in the Santa Susana Pass when they stumbled across a hoard of discarded treasure.

β€˜I was walking down right over here off of Santa Susana Pass near Rocky Peak, and looked down the hill and see a whole bunch of safes. It was crazy,' said David Weisberg.

As they explored the dumping grounds, they also found stolen ATMs that had been gutted.

As they investigated, they found paperwork strewn about, including passports and personal information.

β€˜We were able to connect with them and give them back their stuff, and they were very happy about that,' said Weisberg. β€˜The items that we found in the safe, or around the safe, were passports, there were birth certificates, a wedding album of the victim's daughter, there was a full living trust.'

The owner of the safe also said there had been about $5,000 in cash, but the money was missing.

While the Los Angeles Police Department is investigating, the volunteers are working to clean up the safe and ATM dumping area, dragging the heavy items up the cliffs with ropes.

I imagine it's a bit of work to drag an ATM up a cliff. You have to stop frequently to check your balance.
